Ultralight hiker’s must-have
The first time I saw someone using a hiking sacoche —french for a small bag— was in an article back in 2009 in the Japanese mountain magazine BE-Pal about Tomoya Tsuchiya (Owner of the Hiker’s Depot store in Mitaka, Tokyo) and his thru-hike of the John Muir Trail.
The pouch that he was using was made by Takashi Katsumata (a.k.a. Pei-san), a San Francisco resident, and frequent walker on the U.S. West Coast trails. This pouch, which was later released in its original design by Hiker’s Depot as the “Hiker Sacoche BB Style,” brought about light and a new approach to ultralight hiking.

In 2010, my wife and I set out for the same trail with the BB Style Sacoche. We were very moved by the beauty and scale of the American West Coast and this trip had a profound impact on our way of thinking. We realized that the conditions of the American trails are very different from here in Japan and we decided to reflect our own experiences from living and hiking in Japan much more directly into our products. Upon returning to Japan, I designed our Sacoche to fit the conditions of the Japanese trails equipped with all the functions I yearned for: Neither too big nor too small, a wide opening allowing for easy access, and equipped with a quick height adjustment strap.

I seriously thought about whether to include a zipper or not, but ultimately decided not to. I thought the sacoche would be easier to use if the top was kept open and you could take out what you wanted on the spot much like a tote bag, and its design would become simple and carefree without a zipper. By carrying the sacoche close to your chest, you don’t have to worry about items falling out even on a steep trail. I have never had anything drop out while hiking.
Moreover, the line lock of the Yamatomichi Sacoche enables speedy strap length adjustment. I believe our sacoche is the very first product on the market to use a line lock often seen on a tent guyline for easy length adjustment.
Try our Sacoche once, and you will realize how handy and convenient it is for taking out your snacks, map, sunglasses, etc. while on the move. When sleeping inside a tent, you can store your valuables in your Sacoche beside you, and grab it if you need to go out for a short walk. You can also use it as a large wallet to keep your money and valuables close at hand when staying in a mountain hut or when shopping around town between hikes. (2017)
Form and function
Easy-to-adjust strap
When hiking, a low-hanging sacoche can get in the way during high steps and knee lifts. The Yamatomichi Sacoche is designed for easy height adjustment—keep it high and close to the body while moving, then lower it when you need quick access to a snack or your gear.
Loosen the line lock to lower the Sacoche.
Draw the cord to bring the Sacoche up to your chest.
Keep your Sacoche at chest level while on the move. Lower it when you need to grab a snack.
Keep the strap on the back short for smooth length adjustment.
Easy access horizontal design
Compact in appearance, but roomy enough for the gear and trail snacks you want quick access to, its horizontal shape is designed to fit a standard hiking map.
The main body is divided into two compartments and stands on its own when filled.
Both compartments have a wide 4.5cm gusset and reinforced holes for drainage.
The broad strap reduces stress on your shoulders. The back of the strap is finished in soft-touch mesh.
Small carabiners can be attached to the side webbing loops.
Tips
Wear the sacoche before your backpack to prevent strap tangling.
Use Ziploc bags to keep items dry.
Wear your rainwear over the sacoche.
Material
Four different materials to choose from
For those who prioritize lightness and vibrant colors, we recommend Fibermax 64 (Spinnaker). For those seeking waterproofness and durability, X-Pac VX07 Soft, X-Pac LS07, or ULTRA TX50 are recommended.
Fibermax 64
A nylon ripstop with a hardened coating, originally used for durable yacht spinnakers. Lighter than silnylon, it offers excellent strength and structure, along with exceptionally vibrant color.
X-Pac LS07
Lightweight, highly water-resistant, and abrasion-resistant, with a good balance of structure and flexibility. Its distinctive heathered appearance comes from a resin-coated polyester face fabric, which also helps prevent the fabric from absorbing water, so it does not get heavy when wet. However, it is less durable and less strong than the conventional X-Pac VX07, and the waterproofness of the surface coating will gradually decline over time.
X-Pac VX07 Soft
A multilayer fabric that combines a 70D double-ripstop nylon face, a waterproof PET film core, and a 50D polyester taffeta backing with a high-strength black polyester X-ply arranged in a diamond pattern, using Hydrostate waterproof construction technology. For ease of use as a sacoche, the Yamatomichi Sacoche uses a softened version of VX07.
ULTRA TX50
A three-layer multilayer fabric that combines highly durable 50D triple-ripstop polyester, 45° Ultra™ CrossPly yarn for excellent tear strength, and a 0.006 mm PET film. Exceptionally lightweight yet highly durable, it also offers complete waterproofness.
The color “Sail White,” which uses ULTRA TX50, is expected to arrive after June.
Fibermax 64

Notes before use
- Do not overload the sacoche. In particular, avoid overfilling the front pocket, as items may fall out.
- This product is not water-resistant. We recommend using a Ziploc bag or similar waterproof bag to protect your belongings from rain.
- Insect repellents containing DEET may damage the coating on the fabric components. Please avoid direct contact with this product.
Instructions
Care instructions
- Hand-wash only. Do not machine wash.
- Wash with a soft towel and neutral detergent diluted in lukewarm water. Dry well after cleaning.
- Do not bleach. Do not use fabric softener.
- Wet the soft sponge with the detergent and wipe off the dirt.
- Rinse well so that no detergent remains.
- Spin-dry 30 seconds after washing, or wipe off the moisture with a soft towel and dry it in the shade.
- Do not iron.
- Store in a dark, well-ventilated place.

Delivery
- You will receive an order confirmation email after completing your purchase.
- Orders paid by 15:00 JST on weekdays or 13:30 JST on weekends and Japanese public holidays will be shipped the same day. Orders paid after these times will be shipped the following day.
- Shipping and delivery may be delayed due to holiday periods, natural disasters, severe weather, high order volumes, additional order verification, or other logistical issues.
- You will receive a shipping confirmation email once your order has been shipped.
- Orders placed separately cannot be combined for shipping.
Shipping Within Japan
When purchasing up to three units of this product, Yamato Transport’s lower-cost Nekopos service is available.
Shipping: ¥250
- Your order will be delivered to your mailbox or parcel box.
- Nekopos shipments are not covered for loss or damage.
- Delivery usually takes one to two days after dispatch, though some areas may take longer.
- Tracking is available.
- Delivery dates and times cannot be specified.
If your order exceeds the Nekopos size limit due to the inclusion of other products, it will be shipped by Yamato Transport.

International Shipping
- Orders to North America, Oceania, and Europe are shipped via DHL. Orders to Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Africa are shipped via EMS (Express Mail Service). We are currently unable to ship to Russia due to Japanese postal restrictions.
