COMMUNITY

Yamatomichi HLC is a community that shares the joy of ultralight hiking, pursues its possibilities, and builds its culture.

Activities are carried out at eight locations, including seven across Japan and one in Taiwan, with each area managed by local ambassadors. Various programs are conducted to build richer connections between hiking, life, and community.

Director's Letter

The Learning Pyramid is a model that shows how well different ways of learning stay with us. We first came across the idea last year during a training session for Yamatomichi HLC ambassadors.

From lowest to highest retention, the pyramid is generally described like this: lectures, reading, audiovisual learning, demonstrations, discussion, direct experience, and teaching others.

The BASIC category of Yamatomichi HLC consists of two programs: the Ultralight Hiking for Beginners Lecture Course and the Field Workshop. Together, they are designed to support learning through the higher-retention methods highlighted in the Learning Pyramid.

Of course, taking these programs does not mean you will fully understand ultralight hiking. That part comes through continued trial and error, and by building your own approach through experience.
