Freeing the hood from the hoody
The benefits of a hood for warmth and wind protection are something every hiker knows. With that in mind, we created the Only Hood: a remarkably lightweight, minimalist piece that you can slip on whenever you start to feel a chill.
Made from the same Shadow Rip fabric used in the UL Shirt, it balances lightness, breathability, and wind resistance to keep you comfortable even while on the move. What’s more, the Only Hood is so comfortable you may forget you’re wearing it. It also provides UPF 30+ sun protection.
Use it as a hood when you feel chilly, as a neck warmer, or for sun protection.

If only I had a hood
I was walking along the ridge of Japan’s Northern Alps when a wonderful idea came to me.
In the Northern Alps, the temperature is quite unstable; it can get very hot or very cold, and every time I took my shirt off or put it on, I had to stop and unshoulder my backpack.

I thought about making a T-shirt with a hood but decided against this as the hood would just be in the way when not in use. But then this day, as I was walking along the Northern Alps I thought; “What if I had Only a hood?”
If I had a separate hood, then
- When it gets chilly, I don’t have to unshoulder my backpack to put on an additional layer.
- I don’t have to make a choice between hooded or hoodless clothes.
- Any clothes can be hooded with the Only Hood.
As a hood enthusiast myself, I have always talked about the effectiveness of hoods for hiking wear. So for me, making clothes without hoods sometimes took a lot of persuasions. I was certain that with the Only Hood everything would work out.

So light you forget you’re wearing it
Weighing just 24g, it feels virtually weightless. The separated hood design avoids the restriction and bulk of traditional hoodies, while excellent breathability and quick-drying performance keep it feeling dry and comfortable against the skin.

When folded, the Only Hood is super compact and can be tucked away in a pocket or your backpack.

Details
The drawcord under the chin allows for quick and secure adjustment.
The Only Hood also makes a great neck warmer.
The wide opening makes it easy to put on, and the colored hem helps prevent putting it on the wrong way.
The effectiveness of a hood
From our own experience, we have found that hoods are highly effective in helping maintain body temperature in cold conditions—something that is also supported by a range of studies.
In two experiments, the neck, waist, abdomen, upper arms, fingers, calves, and toes were warmed separately to examine how insulating each area affected overall warmth. The results showed that the effect was greatest when the neck was insulated, indicating that keeping the neck warm can play a significant role in warming the entire body.

Shadow Rip: lightweight, strong, durable
The mountains can be harsh, with unstable weather, sharp temperature swings, strong winds, and intense sunlight. In these conditions, both breathability and wind resistance are essential. Our newly adopted Teijin Shadow Rip fabric delivers that balance while remaining lightweight and durable.
Thin, lightweight fabrics often use a ripstop structure, with thicker yarns woven into a grid to improve tear resistance. However, this can also create a rougher surface that is more prone to pilling through friction.
Shadow Rip is made with fine, high-strength yarns that create a smooth surface with excellent resistance to friction. The result is a fabric that is lightweight, durable, soft to the touch, and resistant to wrinkling.

Notes before use
Preventing color transfer
Before your first use, we recommend giving this item a wash to help rinse out any extra dye from production.
If left unwashed and wet, it may cause color transfer when in contact with white or light-colored clothing for long periods—especially out on the trail or after heavy activity.
*Wash it solo or with similar colors to be safe.
Instructions
Care instructions
- Use a neutral detergent and wash at 40°C or lower.
- Wash separately or use a laundry net bag.
- Line dry in the shade.
- Tumble dry below 60°C.
- Do not bleach and do not use fabric softener.
- Iron on low. Do not steam.
- Do not dry-clean.

Delivery

- Shipping and delivery may be delayed due to holiday periods, natural disasters, severe weather, high order volumes, additional order verification, or other logistical issues.

When purchasing this product on its own, Yamato Transport’s lower-cost Nekopos service is available.

Orders containing two or more items will be packed together in a paper bag or cardboard box and shipped by Yamato Transport.

International Shipping
- Orders to North America, Oceania, and Europe are shipped via DHL. Orders to Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, and Africa are shipped via EMS (Express Mail Service). We are currently unable to ship to Russia due to Japanese postal restrictions.

Packaging Options
When purchasing this product on its own, you can choose your preferred packaging for all shipping methods other than Nekopos, including international shipping.
- Standard Packaging: The shipping label is attached directly to the product packaging. We recommend this option to reduce waste.
- Protective Packaging: The product packaging is placed inside a paper bag or cardboard box. Choose this option if you do not want the shipping label attached directly to the product packaging.
